One week to go before the Pittsburgh Steelers first pre-season game vs. the Arizona Cardinals. A couple of updates for fans going to the game:

Arizona Cardinals Tailgating. The Arizona Cardinals will not allow charcoal grills of any kind, and gas and electric grills may only be used in Sportsman's Park on the Southwest corner of the stadium. There is some debate as to how strict this policy is or how effectively it will be enforced. Some parking areas are quite far from Sportsman's Park. And oh, yeah, the current high temperature is expected to be 103 degrees, so bring your sunscreen.
Steelers bar in Arizona. If you're in the Phoenix area and don't have tickets to next Saturday's game, consider R.T. O'Sullivan's on Southern Avenue in Mesa. Owner Ray O'Sullivan says large crowds of Steelers fans have been gathering at the home of $2 Harps for more than 10 years. While a lot of fans will be headed to the game, he expects to sell a lot of Iron City Beer and good food to a lot of Steelers fans.

Today's Dayton Daily News reports that the Cincinatti Bengals are a sellout for the 2006 season and that no single game tickets will be available.

Bengals executive Mike President Mike Brown joins the chorus of NFL executives relieved to not have to sell tickets to the Black and Gold clad Mongols to the North East. "The excitement is measurable," Brown said during the pre-training camp luncheon at Paul Brown Stadium. "We've sold out the whole season and that's a milestone. It used to be we'd only sell out whenPittsburgh or Cleveland fans came down, and that's not how you want to sell out."

From this morning's Allentown Morning Call:

"Julie C. Miller, who lived in Lehigh and Northampton counties, was charged March 30 with three counts of mail fraud for allegedly accepting payments for eBay auctions of Pittsburgh Steelers tickets, jewelry and rare coins, but never sending the merchandise."

Ms. Miller used several different user ids to sell more than $51,000 in merchandise that was never delivered.

The Jacksonville Jaguars became the second team in a week to thump their chest about their ticket selling prowess when they announced yesterday that they are 1,500 season ticket sales away from beginning the NFL's 24th season ticket waiting list. Of course, this number excludes the 1,569 club seats that the team has left to sell for the 2006 season.

In addition the Jaguars announced that they have sold all 5,400 tickets that they have earmarked for 2006 games against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts and New York Giants. This also means that there will be no single game tickets available for those games this year.

Steelers Fans In Jacksonville, News At 11...

First Coast News reports that despite having 5,000 season ticket holders who have not renewed their season tickets this year, the Jacksonville Jaguars are closing in on selling out their allotment of season tickets and are close to instituting a waiting list for season tickets.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced today that Bon Jovi and Nickelback will perform at Heinz Field on Sunday, July 23, 2006 in the "Steelers World Championship Celebration Concert."

Tickets for 2006 regular season games have been on sale since before the end of the NFL Playoffs.

Fans that want Steelers vs. Chargers tickets have several viable choices.

First, the AFC North Division opponents are weighted very heavily at the end of the season. Just 1 of the Steelers first 9 games is against an AFC North team, Cincinnatti at Heinz Field on September 24. Of the final 7 games, 5 are against the AFC North.

Second, there are 4 night games on the schedule, including 3 of the first four: at home, on September 7 at home against Miami, on September 8 at Jacksonville, and on October 9 in San Diego. If recent history is any indication, the Jacksonville and San Diego games should have large crowds of Steelers fans.

Third, the Steelers will get a lot of rest early in the season, with 10 days between the Thursday night Miami opener and the Monday night Jacksonville game, and a bye-week following the Cincinnatti game in week 3. Later in the season, the Steelers will have jus 4 days to rest between the December 3 game against Tampa Bay and the December 7 , Thursday night game against the Cleveland Browns. At least both of those games are at home.

Steeler Ticket Market Report

With the NFL about to announce the remainder of its 2006 regular season schedule on Thursday, April 6, with a 2 hour show on the NFL Network and NFL.com, I thought it would be a great time to look at the offseason market for 2006 Pittsburgh Steelers Tickets on ebay.

In the last 15 days, 166 tickets to 2006 Steelers games changed hands on ebay, for a total market price of $36,155.91, an average of $217.81 per ticket.

Steelers Pre-Season Tickets: $2,247.62 and 26 tickets to Pittsburgh's 4 preseason games traded hands. Preseason volume was driven by demand for Pittsburgh's first preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals in the first ever game in Arizona's new stadium.

Steelers Regular-Season Tickets: $33,908.29 and 140 tickets, an average of $242.20 to Pittsburgh's 16 regular season games were traded. The market was driven by demand for the Thursday, March 7 opener vs. the Miami Dolphins at Heinz Field with 40 tickets with an average selling price of $385.68 changing hands.

Steelers Home Game Tickets: 66 tickets to Steelers home games were sold for a total of $18,982, and average of $288 per seat. Steelers Dolphins tickets had the highest average selling price and market volume at 40 tickets and $15,427. Tickets to the Steelers pre-season opener against the Minnesota Vikings had the lowest demand at 2 tickets for $100 each changing hands.

Steelers Away Game Tickets: 100 tickets to Steelers 2006 Away games were sold for a total of 17,174, an average of $172 per ticket. Pittsburgh Steelers vs. San Diego Chargers had the strongest demand, with 34 tickets sold for a total sale price of $8,574.96, $252.20 per ticket. The regular season game against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium is the only Steelers game that did not have a single transaction in the past 2 weeks.

Surprises? First that there is so much activity before the dates of the games are even known. That being said, I am a little bit surprised by the relatively low pricing for home games.

Several outlets are selling season tickets to Steelers home games for more than $2,000 for 10 home games. A ticket purchased for each home game at the average selling price would net you tickets to every game for a cool $1,593, significantly less than $2,000. Remove the $385 for the Dolphins game and you've bought 9 tickets for $1,200, still expensive but significantly less than $200 per game.

Second, the singularity of demand for San Diego Chargers game tickets. Having attended last season's Monday Night Football game at Qualcomm Stadium, I expect there to be a large group of Steeler fans in attendance. But am a little bit surprised at the strong pricing given that Chargers season tickets are available for as little as $600.

Forecast: I expect the market to heat up a bit next week as specific dates and times become known, especially as prime time matchups are confirmed. I also expect greater supply in the marketplace as tickets will start to become available from places like StubHub that were not selling tickets for games whose date and time had not been announced.

The Arizona Cardinals Want You To Know...

The Arizona Cardinals want everyone to know that there will be no partial season ticket plans this year. That's right, the only team in the NFL to draw fewer than 500,000 and 400,000 fans wants you to know that the only way to guarantee seats to four games this year is to purchase a season ticket plan. If there is a Steeler Nation, there must be a Cardinal County.

"Based on the demand we've experienced and how well season ticket sales have gone so far, it's not practical to offer them this year." says Ron Minegar, Cardinals Vice President/Marketing and Sales.

If you want to take this to heart, call the Cardinals at 602.379.0102, but be patient, you might have trouble getting through. I may have to eat my words, but I'm guessing that going down to the box office and buying tickets to 4 games when single game tickets will work too.

Of course they also want to remind us that they will open their new stadium against the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 12 (tickets).

Jacksonville First Coast News (ABC 25 and NBC 12) is also worried about Steelers fans:

"Any Jags fan can tell you how frustrating it is to see a sea of yellow and black instead of teal when the Pittsburgh Steelers come to town. But if some season tickets aren't renewed, those tickets will go to Steelers fans, or any other team scheduled to play here.

Steelers Pre-season Schedule Finalized

Building on yesterday's announcement that the Steelers will kickoff their 2006 Pre-Season Schedule by opening the Arizona Cardinals' brand new Cardinals Stadium on August 12, 2006 (tickets), the NFL released the remaining 2006 pre-season schedule today.

In addition to the game at Arizona, the Steelers will travel to Philadelphia for an ESPN televised game against the Philadelphia Eagles (tickets) on August 25, 2006 at 8PM.

The Steelers will host 2 home games at Heinz Field during the preseason. During the weekend of August 17-21 the Steelers will play the Minnesota Vikings (tickets). During the weekend of August 31-September 2, the Steeler will host the Carolina Panthers (tickets) in a preview of a regular season matchup that will take place at Carolina.

Catching Up With The Steelers Ticket Market

Virtually since the final moment of Super Bowl XL, the market for Steelers tickets for the 2006 season began to heat up. Here's an overview of recent developments that you might have missed that could give you a leg up in securing your seats to Steelers home and away games for the 2006 season.

3/28/2006. Steelers owner Dan Rooney proposed a rule that would prevent teams from making fans buy tickets to other games if they want to purchase tickets to a specific high-profile contest. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

The verdict: The San Diego Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals had these types of ticket policies last year, but that did not prevent large number of Steelers fans from getting tickets.

Ticket markets are very liquid. Fans have access to more seats to more games than ever before. This practice merely takes $50-$100 that would have gone directly to a ticket broker and puts it in the pocket of NFL owners. Sad to say, but this is a bit of grandstanding by the Rooney's who have the luxury of selling out every game, no matter who's playing.

3/27/2006. The NFL announced that the Miami Dolphins will participate in the nationally televised season opener on September 7, 2006 at 8:30 PM at Heinz Field. (SI.com)

The Verdict: Tickets for this one are already widely available.

3/17/2006. The Pittsburgh Steelers announced plans to add 700 additional club-level seats at Heinz Field. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

The verdict: This adds 7,000 premium seats to Pittsburgh's inventory. Good news for all ticket buyers and especially good news for a few lucky people on the season ticket waiting list.

Pre-season Away Game Vs. Arizona Cardinals Announced

West-coast Steelers fans will be thrilled to hear that the NFL announced yesterday that the Pittsburgh Steelers will play their first preseason game on August 12, 2006 against the Arizona Cardinals.

The game will be the first game played in the Arizona's brand new Cardinals Stadium, so demand for Steelers @ Cardinals tickets will be high, despite being the 1st preseason game and being in Arizona in August. (The new stadium has a nifty retractable roof and field.)

Normally, a game in Arizona is good news for Steelers fans. The Cardinals were the only team in the NFL to draw fewer than 400,000 fans in 2005. The Cardinals were also the only team with attendance below 300,000 in 2005. That's right, the Cardinals were last in the NFL in attendance by 100,000 fans.

If this were anything but a preseason game, I would be recommending the purchase of Arizona Cardinals season tickets immediately as your best way to secure tickets to the game. Season ticket packages start at just $10 per game for upper deck end zone tickets.

The Cardinals are due to announce single game ticket information in June or July. Tickets are already available on ebay.
